Amidst the battle of the giants, Bajaj, Yamaha and Honda lurks this compact yet dynamic and powerful predator - TVS. I had always liked the Apache advertising campaigns, they were directed towards the youth. In fact this is when me and most of us stood up and noticed a company called TVS. The Apache was its trump card. Thanks to TVS, we managed to get hold of the Apache RTR Fi 160. Those two additional acronyms do sound impressive, and they are. RTR(Racing throttle response) and Fi (Fuel Injection) give it a purposeful name.

The BIKE that we had got was an Orange colored one. Strange color you may say, but not stranger than a certain BIKE lime green, eh?

The sky again was, not surprisingly, painted with dark clouds and the time was 6.15PM. The light was pathetic and the sun was about to go down taking away all the chances of any photoshoot. Without wasting anytime I sat on the bike, inserted the key and turned it on. The response was a sweet whirr of the FI self test and the ultra cool dials lit up. I was sold to the console assembly and the blue lit LCD.

The shield motif on the handle bar assembly did the trick for me. I personally felt that it was fantastic to see a company develop a Glossary Term: Bike

The pinstriping was a very subtle but important touch which enhanced the character of the bike.

RTR-Racing Throttle Response,when TVS came with its newer variant of Apache named Apache RTR in 2007 it surprised many because we haven’t heard any product being named like this before. Surely TVS which had a vast and enormously successful racing program discussed about it before coming with this name.

A short first ride on the RTR back in 2007 made it clear why this is named RTR. It not only comes equipped with sporty looks and ergonomics, hi-spec digital clock, petal disc at the front and racing stripes but it also performed like a small crotch rocket coming straight from the track. The biggest difference is definitely the addition of advanced Efi technology. Other notable additions are rear disc, retractive tank scoop (I liked them), a better digital speedo with added features including a blue backlit speedometer that introduces data logging for the first time in the category. Data pertaining to the last three zero to sixty timings and the last three top speeds are logged and displayed on the speedometer. The bike’s new and open chain case gives it an even racier cue. The new racing stripes design gives the product a fresh new appeal which screams its racing intent. The pin striping which is now factory fitted also looks good. The new blue backlight speedo console looks good and I personally favor it over the previous one. The added features will surely be a hit with everyone. There is top speed recorder which automatically records the top speed attained by the bike. Like the previous version the clip-ons are adjustable so you have two different seating positions. One suited for street and the other for track.

The sound was very unique and I haven’t heard something like this before. My mind started telling RTR FI, RTR FI and there she is approaching from the corner of the road.

I was just waiting to lay my hands on the beast so completed the official formalities as soon as possible. Pressed the starter and there she came into life with a meaty roar( The starter mechanism is quite good and the Glossary Term: Bike

The first thing that strikes you is the power delivery which is now much more crisp and smooth due to the addition of fuel injection. The bike’s character is pretty different from anything available right now saving Yamaha R-1-5 which I haven’t ridden extensively yet. Barring the first gear all the other gears are pretty powerful. HONDA LAUNCHES STUNNER 125cc BIKE

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India today unveiled the Honda CBF Stunner in New Delhi.

The 125cc Honda Stunner produces 11bhp at 8000rpm and 11nm of torque at 6500rpm(POWER LESS THAN THAT OF TVS FLAME,IN POWER SEGMENT TVS STILL RULES). Honda claims the Stunner can achieve 60kmph from standstill in 5.2 seconds, which ought to make the Stunner one of the fastest 125cc motorcycles in India, if not the fastest.

Loaded with goodies like front and rear tubeless tyres, alloys, half fairing and stepped up seat, the CBF Stunner is the most beautiful and loaded 125cc motorcycle in India.

However all this comes at a price, the basic kick start drum brake version of Honda CBF Stunner would Rs. 47,070, while the self start drum brake version costs Rs. 49,820, while the top of the line disc brake version (with self start) would set you back by Rs. 51,655 (prices ex. showroom Delhi).

Maruti 800 gets LPG version

India Limited (MSIL) on Friday launched a liquified petroleum gas (LPG) variant of its entry-level offering, Maruti 800. The car will run both on LPG and petrol and attracts a price tag of Rs 2,05,682 for the standard version and Rs 2,26,177 for the AC version.

The Maruti 800 duo was economical, environment friendly and manufactured with factory-fitted kits, said Mayank Pareek, Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, MSIL.

It works on a gas mixer system that results in optimum performance and superior emission, delivering a power of 35 bhp and a torque of 56 Nm. The LPG variant emits 10 per cent lower carbon dioxide than the petrol variant and has been designed in-house by a team of 24 engineers.

In its existing portfolio, Maruti already has Wagon R and Omni Cargo in LPG versions. The company has sold almost 125,000 cars that are powered by LPG and compressed natural gas. The LPG variants constitute around 23 per cent of national sales for the Wagon R and Omni.

"The success of these models is a clear reflection of customer preference for products that are safe, light on the pocket and environment friendly. We are sure that the Maruti 800 duo will find favour with customers as well," Pareek said

TVS 125cc Flame:

Out of the seven TVS launches, this is the hottest launch not only for the sake of name - the flame. This 125cc bike which replaces the 125cc victor, has already triggered fire between the India’s top two wheeler manufacturer. Bajaj Auto has decided to sue TVS Motor for infringement of its patented engine technology. Bajaj Auto claims that TVS has used its digital twin spark ignition technology (DTSi) in recently unveiled TVS’s 125cc bike Flame.

Design and features:

Flame sports a new design and embraces the contemporary black theme. Flame borrows the headlamp,front fender, attractive rear view mirrors, body coloured shock absorber springs and special engine cowl from its big brother apache. TVS says that the styling of the Flame is inspired by the Delta wing design found in the latest fighter jets. So, it has adopted a triangular (DeltaEdge) design theme to many of the Flame’s features.TVS 125cc Flame is packed with exciting features like attractive body graphics, alloy wheels, disc brake at the front, electric start and handle bar weights to control vibrations.

CC-VTi engine:

TVS which used VTi(Variable Timing Ignition) engine for its economic bike ‘centra’ now developed a more sophiscated engine for the new 125cc flame. 125cc Flame sports the india’s first three-valve CC VTi (controlled combustion variable timing intelligent) engine. The engine’s produces maximum power of 10.5 bhp at 8,250 rpm. Comparing the figures flame 125cc leads over the Honda shine, suzuki zeus, hero Honda splendour, hero honda Glamour but trails to yamaha gladiator and Bajaj discover 125cc atleast in the paper. TVS developed the new engine for the 125cc flame in collaboration of AVL of Austria. Similar to the Bajaj’s DTSi, flames CC-VTi engine hosts two spark plugs which are located at opposite ends of the combustion chamber. CC-VTi engine is breathing and expelling through 3 valves (first time a 125cc motorcycle featuring 3 valves). The engine features two different intake ports called swirl port and power port. The swirl port creates a swirl motion of the intake air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, thereby leading to a more efficient burning of lean air-fuel mixture and helping improve the bike’s fuel efficiency. In the power throttle mode, the power port opens to allow a high flow rate of the air-fuel mixture to deliver high power.

TVS FLAME RE-LAUNCHED WITH SINGLE SPARK PLUG

TVS Motor Company on Monday launched its controversial 125 cc motorcycle 'Flame', which has been accused by rival Bajaj Auto of infringing upon its patented technology, with a modified engine.

The company introduced the bike, at Rs 46,000 (ex-showroom across the country), with a single spark ignition engine based on Controlled Combustion Variable Timing Intelligent (CC-VTi) technology.

"TVS, in keeping with its tradition of breaking new ground in two-wheelers, is proud to have brought this world-class engine technology into India with the CCVTi engine. This engine has been developed and patented by AVL and licensed to TVS in India," said Mr.Venu Srinivasan, CMD of TVS, in a statement.

Earlier, TVS had planned to launch the vehicle with a twin spark engine, which Bajaj Auto had objected to. Subsequently, after legal wrangles, Madras High Court had stayed the Chennai-based company from producing and marketing of the motorcycle which uses the controversial technology.

TVS said its new 'Flame' uses a "universally accepted and traditionally proven" single spark plug ignition system.

Austria-based AVL is the world leader in Internal Combustion Engine technology and develops power train systems. It is a leading provider of technology to the global engine and automotive industry.

In March, TVS Motor expects to sell 15,000 units of Flame. Sales would rise month after month and reach 25,000 units a month by October, Mr Srinivasan said.

Talking to newspersons on the sidelines of the conference, officials of the company said that the current quarter may not be good, but said that next year would be a much better one, thanks mainly to the Flame.At a press conference here today, the company’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Venu Srinivasan, said that the company expects Flame to fetch sales of Rs 700 crore in 2008-09.

The HEROHONDA HUNK

1) Hero Honda Hunk is available in four colours - panther black, fighter blue, red and silver. On the road Hunk comes at a price of Rs61,590.2) Hero Honda Hunk is powered by an 150cc Engine, delivering 14.4PS @ 8500 RPM of power and 12.80 N-m @ 6500 of torque. Advanced Tumble Flow Induction (ATFI) helps the Hunk to provide imporved torque and higher fuel efficiency. The engines breathes through a CV carburettor and the Ignition is guided by a microprocessor. The engine is teamed with a five-speed constant mesh gearbox(1-down 4-up). Hero Honda claims Hunk can hit 60 Kmph mark in 5 seconds.3) Hero Honda Hunk: Hunk is the first bike from Hero Honda to feature gas charged rear suspension(GRS-Gas Reservoir Suspension in Hero Honda’s term). The stepped seat offers lumbar support to the rider. Underneath the overhung rear fender is metal plates to prevent rattling.4) Though the Hunk’s design is largely a resemblance of TVS apache. Hunk’s chrome finished 3-Dimensional ” HUNK” Emblem, gold finished front forks, silver finished central section and muscular rear cowl adds extra charm to this muscle. A bulky-looking silver heat shield bolts atop the silencer. Hunk sports contemporary five-spoke alloy rims in matt black, a theme that continues to its engine cases, silencer as well as the chain shroud. Infact, matte black panels dominates the painted panels which makes Hunk more muscular.

5) Hero Honda Hunk shares the tubular, diamond frame type chassis of the CBZ Xtreme. The dimensions are also same as the CBZ X-Treme except for the Hunk is shorter by 50mm compared to the X-Treme. Though Hunk is shorter the deep knee recess, straight handlebar and the neatly placed foot pegs offers comfortable riding position. The muscle bike is slightly heavier than others, it weighs 145kg.

6) Hero Honda Hunk features bold, chrome rimmed analog instruments includes a red back speedometer, tachometer, fuel-gauge and trip facility complement the standard warning lamps.

7) Hero Honda Hunk features 240mm disc at the front and 130mm drum brake at the rear. The bike comes with a meaty puncture-resistant and wider rear tyre. Complementing the wider tyres are 18inch larger rims. The bulged rear cowl dominates the sharp small tail lamp. Both at the rear and the front Hero Honda uses diamond shaped clear lens indicators.

TVS APACHE RTR E-FI

More information has come out on TVS apache RTR FI(Fuel Injection). The 159.7cc of apache RTR is equipped with Fuel Injection Technology. Apart from the new heart, apache also features disc brake in the rear to provide necessary control for apachians. TVS has made few vital changes in design department too. Apache RTR FI slim chain cover (open type) and Hunk(hero Honda’s 150cc) like muscular shrouds on both sides of the tank. These design addition has made the beast more masculine. New stickerings FI) on panels and on tank shrouds gives the necessary exclusiveness.
